Sonnet of Gratitude

Oh, SECPA, with heart so light,
Thy stage, a haven for thespians bold,
Where tales and dreams take flight into the night,
In harmony, your story shall be told.

But lo, when obstacles obstruct thy way,
And King Street Theatre stands worn and drear,
'Twas SECPA's helping hand, without delay,
That whispered hope, dispelling every fear.

Grateful are we for SECPA's embrace,
For theatre dreams we thought beyond our reach.
Their generosity, a saving grace,
Has now restored what time sought to impeach.

So let us raise our voices in accord,
To SECPA, we thank thee, gracious Techs!

Public Letter

Pride YMM stands in solidarity with the transgender and gender non-conforming community, particularly youth and children, in light of the proposed policies by the UCP. We are committed to participating in the consultations hosted by the Government of Alberta to advocate for the protection and safety of all individuals.

Trans rights are human rights. We firmly believe that every individual deserves protection, equality, and freedom. No one should be left behind in the pursuit of justice and equality.

Dear Stakeholders,

I am pleased to present the highlights of Swamp Rat Experience's achievements in 2023. The year was marked by several significant milestones that have further solidified our position in the theatre community. One of the most notable accomplishments was the successful production of the Broadway musical RENT, which garnered acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

In addition to RENT, we conducted numerous workshops and master classes that provided valuable learning opportunities for aspiring artists. These educational initiatives not only enhanced the skills of participants but also fostered a sense of community among theatre enthusiasts.

Our special events and fundraising efforts throughout the year were instrumental in supporting our operations and outreach programs. The generous contributions from our donors and supporters have enabled us to continue offering high-quality productions and educational initiatives.

One of the key highlights of 2023 was the launch of Theatre Club, a new program tailored for youth interested in exploring the world of theatre. Through Theatre Club, we have successfully engaged a new generation of artists and provided them with a platform to express their creativity.

Our commitment to community engagement was evident in the various outreach programs and collaborative projects we undertook last year. By actively involving the local community in our activities, we have created a more inclusive and welcoming space for theatre enthusiasts of all backgrounds.

I draw inspiration for my art from play. The ability to explore through silliness and laughter fuels my creativity. In a world where adults have limited opportunities to let go and simply play, I find my muse. Without expectations or demands, I embrace the joy of play.

In these moments, I practice instant forgiveness. It allows me to release any self-imposed pressures and judgment. Through play, I can shed my everyday personas โ€“ the professional, the parent, the partner, the tax payer. I tune into and embrace my inner playfulness once again.

Playfulness opens my mind to new possibilities and perspectives. It encourages me to take risks and think outside the box. Laughter becomes the soundtrack to my creative process, infusing my art with a sense of lightness and spontaneity.

Through play, I reconnect with my inner child โ€“ curious, imaginative, and free. I embrace the freedom to experiment, make mistakes, and learn without fear of failure. Playfulness reminds me that art is not just about the final product but also the process of creation itself.

In a world that often values productivity over play, I cherish these moments of silliness and laughter. They remind me of the importance of joy, spontaneity, and creativity in my artistic journey. Play is not just a source of inspiration but a way of being โ€“ a reminder to approach life with a sense of wonder and lightheartedness.

I am committed to seizing every chance to evolve as an artist. I engage in a diverse array of workshops, encompassing clowning, stage combat, burlesque, improv, directing, acting for the camera, and more. In my capacity as an arts administrator, I strive to rectify the scarcity of artistic development opportunities in our region.

By bringing such resources locally, I aim to empower fellow artists facing similar limitations. Despite my yearning for broader training experiences, constraints imposed by familial responsibilities and a demanding professional trajectory curtail my ability to pursue extensive off-site instruction.

Nonetheless, I maintain that formal classes are not the sole conduit for growth. I firmly believe in the educational value of inquisitiveness, experimentation during rehearsals, and receptivity to insights from all present in a shared creative space. As such, I diligently imbibe knowledge by posing queries, exploring various approaches, and remaining receptive to the potential lessons each individual in the room may impart.

Though external constraints restrict my mobility, my commitment to continuous learning remains steadfast. I am resolved to mine every possible avenue for artistic enrichment, leveraging every moment and resource available within the confines of my present circumstances.

Hanna Fridhed, artistic director and executive producer of non-profit theatre company Swamp Rat Experience, is a stalwart of the Wood Buffalo theatre community. With over a decade of experience, Hanna has held key roles such as Artistic Director, Marketing and Engagement Manager for Theatre; Just Because, Director of the ADFA North Region, and board member of Alberta Drama Festival Association, Arts Council Wood Buffalo, NorthWord, and Theatre Alberta. Her dedication and leadership have been instrumental in the growth and success of various theatrical initiatives in the region. Hanna's passion for the arts, coupled with her strategic vision, continues to shape the cultural landscape of Wood Buffalo through innovative performances and community engagement.

In my artistic practice, constant growth, learning, and unlearning are fundamental themes. Each project and production serves as an opportunity for new insights and knowledge. I place immense value in teamwork and the ensemble aspect of a production, ensuring that every individual involved feels recognized and their contributions esteemed. Theatre, in my perspective, is a collaborative effort where every person's input is vital in shaping the world of the play.

I believe that each project has its distinct characteristics and presents opportunities to craft something truly unique. Embracing the process of continuous learning and unlearning fuels my creativity and allows me to evolve as an artist. The dynamic nature of theatre demands openness to new perspectives, ideas, and techniques, which I eagerly welcome with each new endeavor.

By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment within the production team, I strive to cultivate a space where creativity can flourish and every individual feels empowered to contribute their best work. Recognizing the significance of collective creation, I honour the diverse talents and perspectives that each team member brings to the table, enriching the collaborative process and ultimately enhancing the quality of our artistic output.

Through a commitment to growth, learning, and the spirit of ensemble, I aim to nurture a culture of creativity and mutual respect within every project I undertake, resulting in a collective artistic vision that resonates deeply with audiences and participants alike.

As an actor and director, the creative process takes precedence over the final product. While I aim for the audience to leave a performance with a new perspective or a good laugh, the true joy lies in the room where mistakes are made, where experimentation and exploration unfold. This space allows us to play, be wrong, and venture into uncharted territories of expression. The process itself is where the magic of theatre is truly found.

My passion for performing and directing is deeply rooted in my love for working with others and building a sense of community through artistic collaboration. The act of playing together with scene partners and being fully present in the moment is where I find true fulfillment as an artist. The trust and openness that are fostered through these connections are rare and precious, creating a space for exploration and growth both personally and artistically.

Engaging in the process of creating performances allows me to expand not only my artistic practice but also my understanding of myself and the world around me. Each new project presents an opportunity to immerse myself in the unknown, pushing my boundaries and discovering new insights about the human experience. The challenge of diving into something unfamiliar and intimidating is exhilarating, driving me to explore and question to a depth I never thought possible.

Through the medium of theatre, I find a pathway to opening my mind, body, and soul to new ideas, connections, and energies. The shared experience of bringing a story to life on stage is where I feel most alive and connected to the world. It is through this shared journey of creation and discovery that I continue to evolve as an artist and as a person, embracing the transformative power of the performing arts.

The 2SLGBTQIA+ community is currently facing numerous dangers and discrimination that threaten their very existence and well-being. From a lack of legal protection to societal prejudice and violence, the path towards true equality remains an ongoing battle. However, amidst these challenges, there is hope in creating safe and inclusive spaces where everyone is invited to tell their story. These spaces not only promote individual growth and self-expression but also foster better communities by combating discrimination, promoting learning, and engaging individuals in a meaningful way.

At Swamp Rat Experience (SRE), our mission is to provide a safe space for individuals to learn about theater in a welcoming and low-risk environment. In addition to providing accessibility, SRE recognizes the importance of creating a safe environment for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. Collaboration with Pride YMM has been a crucial step in this endeavor, as we work together to ensure our spaces are inclusive, affirming, and free from discrimination. By actively partnering with 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations and advocating for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, we work to dismantle the barriers that hinder individuals from fully expressing their identities and participating in the theatre community. This work has included free workshops and one-on-one coaching throughout Pride Month, performance opportunities for 2SLGBTQIA+ emering artists, training for our artistic team, and hiring an Intimacy Director to ensure safe rehearsal and performance practices when working with sensitive and potentially triggering material.

The statistics speak volumes about the challenges faced by LGBTQIA2S+ individuals in Canada. According to the Jasmin Roy Foundation's LGBT Reality Survey in 2017, a staggering 54% of LGBTQIA2S+ Canadians have not come out to their work colleagues, highlighting a fear of rejection and the potential impact on their careers. Additionally, 45% have not come out to their classmates, exposing the pervasive discrimination that exists within educational settings. These figures serve as a reminder of the urgent need for safe spaces where LGBTQIA2S+ individuals can freely express themselves and feel accepted without fear of mockery or bullying.

Creating safe and inclusive spaces not only benefits individuals but also strengthens communities as a whole. When everyone is invited to share their stories, perspectives, and experiences, a rich tapestry of diversity emerges. In these spaces, people from different backgrounds can come together, learn from each other, and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for one another. By actively embracing diversity, communities become more vibrant, compassionate, and understanding.
Moreover, inclusive spaces serve as catalysts for change. They provide opportunities for education, empathy, and growth. As individuals come together, they challenge stereotypes, dismantle prejudices, and foster a culture of acceptance and respect. In these safe spaces, lasting connections are formed that transcend societal boundaries, fostering a sense of belonging and unity within the community.

Ultimately, the creation of safe spaces is not just an option but a necessity. It is a collective responsibility to ensure that every individual feels welcomed, respected, and celebrated for who they are. By eliminating barriers, fighting inequity, and collaborating with organizations like Pride YMM, Swamp Rat Experience strives to create a community that values and embraces the diverse identities found within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Only through these efforts can we build a better future, where discrimination is eradicated, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our society. A community where everyone is safe to tell their story.

7th Annual Pride YMM Festival Celebrates Inclusion and Love in Wood Buffalo

Fort McMurray, AB - June 26, 2023 - The 7th annual Pride YMM Festival took place on Saturday, June 24, at the Heritage Shipyard, and was a resounding success. This vibrant celebration of our diverse community attracted over 2,000 attendees and featured more than 40 vendors and community groups, showcasing the true spirit of inclusion, love, and the power of showing up as your authentic self.

The festival was a testament to the strength and unity of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and its allies, serving as a beautiful reminder of the love and support that prevails amidst times of fear and hate. Throughout the day, attendees experienced an outpouring of positivity and acceptance, creating an atmosphere brimming with progress, unity, and unwavering love.

โ€œThe Pride YMM Festival showcases the remarkable strength and unity within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,โ€ says Pride YMM Executive Director Hanna Fridhed. โ€œIt is the resounding answer to those who question the need for affirming events celebrating the rainbow community. This festival fills our hearts with immense joy, reminding us that we are never alone. In its vibrant embrace, we find solace knowing that the voices of intolerance and prejudice pale in comparison to the resounding chorus of love and acceptance. Together, we stand unwaveringly strong. Together, we unequivocally belong."

Local musicians and dancers captivated the crowd with beautiful, and sometimes hilarious, performances, while the charismatic Michael Jesso emceed the event. A highlight of the festival and a true audience favourite was the outstanding performances by both local and visiting drag queens who graced the stage with their talent and charisma.

The success of the Pride YMM Festival would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our platinum sponsors, TD Bank and Suncor, who exhibited outstanding commitment in making this event a reality. We also express our appreciation to our gold sponsors Juniper Naturopathic, Imperial, Muessle Flett Law, Enbridge, Krystal Jessome Coldwell Banker, Interpipeline, as well as our bronze sponsors, Higher Health, Servus, RBC, and our supporting sponsors, Unicorn Booth, Mix 103.7 and 100.5 Cruz FM, Stonebridge Hotel, and Nicholas Vardy Photography.

The Pride YMM Festival owes its success to the dedication and hard work of our volunteer Board of Directors. Their unwavering commitment and positive spirit made the first Wood Buffalo Pride Month a resounding success.

Swamp Rat Experience Artistic Director's Report

Annual General Meeting: June 28, 2023

Dear members of the Swamp Rat Experience community,
It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I present to you the first Artistic Director's report as a registered non-profit organization. Over the past year, we have embarked on a journey to create safe and inclusive spaces for our artists, staff, and audiences, while simultaneously exploring new methods of theatrical creation.

Commitment to Safe and Inclusive Spaces

As a theatre company, we firmly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in and enjoy theatre. To that end, we have made significant strides in creating safe and inclusive spaces for all. We have implemented comprehensive anti-discrimination and harassment policies, ensuring that our environment remains free from any form of bigotry or unequal treatment. These policies will continue to evolve and be updated as we listen and learn from our experiences.
Furthermore, we have actively worked towards diversifying our programming, casting, and creative teams. By embracing different backgrounds, perspectives, and stories, we aim to represent the rich tapestry of our community and further enhance the inclusivity of our artistic content.

Exploring New Ways to Create Theatre

In this past year, we have embraced innovation and explored new avenues in theatrical creation. We recognize that the world is evolving rapidly, and theatre must evolve alongside it. Our commitment to continuous learning and exploration has allowed us to push boundaries, experiment with emerging technologies, and explore interdisciplinary collaborations.
We have successfully integrated digital mediums into our productions, seeking to reach broader audiences beyond the confines of the physical stage. Our online performances and digital platforms have allowed us to connect with our community members who may have previously faced barriers to attending live theatre. This expansion of our reach not only broadens our audience base but also provides new opportunities for emerging artists to showcase their work.

Nurturing Established and Emerging Artists

One of our fundamental beliefs is that talent should be nurtured, whether it is established or emerging. Over the past year, we have focused on creating developmental opportunities for artists at different stages of their careers.
For established artists, we have continued to provide support through our commissioning initiatives and collaboration opportunities. By fostering partnerships between experienced artists and emerging talent, we have encouraged mentorship and the sharing of knowledge, ensuring the longevity and growth of our artistic community.
At the same time, we have invested resources in emerging artists, offering workshops, training programs, and opportunities for them to
