Your Worship and Members of Council,

I'm writing to you to express my support of Keyano College receiving the full requested Sustaining Grant funding of $559,615.00 for the Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre.

Keyano Theatre has played an immense role in establishing and maintaining theatre and the performing arts in Wood Buffalo; not only as a producer of community theatre, but as a supporter of other arts organizations, a partner, and an arts champion. Keyano Theatre has been an incubator of careers in the arts, and they contribute to the quality of life in the region by producing exceptional community theatre and bringing in professional performance art. This is a place where the Wood Buffalo community comes together to play, experience life through the arts, and express themselves.

As stated in the Municipal Development Plan “supporting the region’s cultural development enhances quality of life for all, generates economic benefits, and facilitates the additional attraction and retention of newcomers and their families. Relative to other comparable municipalities in Alberta, Wood Buffalo is underserviced in terms of arts and culture facilities. Investing in the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure can strengthen regional pride and identity, as can promoting and supporting the local arts and cultural sector, and integrating culture and heritage into the design of neighbourhoods.”

Keyano Theatre has been a staple in our community for the past 40 years, and as a Wood Buffalo resident, I am strongly in favour of the continued municipal support of their operations. Without them, this would be a less vibrant place to live.
